James Workman served as White House appointee and speechwriter to Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, later joining Environmental Defense Fund as deputy director of its catch shares design center. He is co-author, with EDF's Amanda Leland, of Sea Change: Unlikely Allies and a Success Story of Oceanic Proportions and author of the award-winning Heart of Dryness: How the Last Bushmen Can Help Us Endure the Coming Age of Permanent Drought. He's taught at Wesleyan and Whitman and studied at Yale, Oxford, and Stanford, but his real education came through restoring wildland fire, reintroducing wolves, breaking down in the Kalahari while smuggling to dissidents, and raising two daughters.
